Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
Ramsons seeds benefit from a cold stratification process to break dormancy. Mix the seeds with a small amount of damp sand or peat moss. Place the mixture in a sealed plastic bag and refrigerate for 8-12 weeks before planting.
Sowing:
Choose a shaded location with moist, well-drained, fertile soil. Sow the seeds directly in the garden or start them in seed trays or pots. Scatter the seeds on the soil surface and lightly press them into the soil without covering them, as they require light to germinate. Water gently to moisten the soil without washing away the seeds.
Germination:
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Germination can take several weeks to a few months, depending on conditions. Maintain temperatures around 50-60°F (10-15°C) during germination.
Transplanting:
If starting seeds in trays or pots, transplant the seedlings when they have at least two true leaves and are large enough to handle. Space the seedlings about 4-6 inches (10-15 cm) apart to allow for growth. Plant at the same depth they were growing in the trays or pots. Water the transplanted seedlings well to help them establish.
Care and Maintenance:
Water regularly to keep the soil moist, especially during dry periods. Apply a layer of mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Remove any competing weeds to allow the ramsons to thrive. Harvest leaves in spring before the plants flower for the best flavor. Bulbs can be harvested in late summer or early fall. Allow some plants to set seed and self-sow to maintain a continuous population in the garden.
Happy gardening!
