Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
No special preparation is required for winter squash seeds. However, you can soak the seeds in water for a few hours before planting to help speed up germination.
Sowing:
Start seeds indoors 3-4 weeks before the last expected frost date in your area. Use biodegradable pots to minimize root disturbance during transplanting. Plant seeds 1 inch deep and 3-4 seeds per pot. Keep the soil consistently moist and maintain a temperature of 70-85°F (21-29°C) for optimal germination. Alternatively, sow seeds directly into the garden once all danger of frost has passed and soil temperature is consistently above 60°F (16°C).
Germination:
Seeds typically germinate within 7-14 days under optimal conditions.
Transplanting:
Transplant seedlings outdoors after the last frost date when they have at least 2-3 true leaves. Space plants 3-5 feet apart in rows spaced 6-10 feet apart to allow for spreading vines. Provide support such as trellises or sturdy stakes for the vines to climb or sprawl.
Care and Maintenance:
Watering: Water deeply and regularly, especially during dry periods. Avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal diseases. Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plants to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and protect fruits from direct contact with the soil. Pollination: Winter squash plants produce separate male and female flowers. Bees are primary pollinators, so encourage pollinator activity by planting companion plants that attract bees.
