Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
No special preparation required. However, soaking seeds in warm water for 1-2 hours before planting can help soften the seed coat and speed up germination.
Sowing:
Direct sow seeds outdoors after all danger of frost has passed and soil temperature is consistently above 60°F (16°C). Plant seeds 1 inch deep and space them 3-4 feet apart in rows spaced 6-8 feet apart to allow for the sprawling growth habit. Alternatively, start seeds indoors 3-4 weeks before the last frost date. Use biodegradable pots to minimize root disturbance during transplanting.
Germination:
Seeds typically germinate within 7-14 days under optimal conditions. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during the germination period.
Transplanting:
If starting indoors, transplant seedlings outdoors after the last frost date, once they have developed 2-3 true leaves. Harden off seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over a week. Plant seedlings at the same depth as they were growing in their pots, ensuring the roots are well-covered and supported.
Care and Maintenance:
Watering: Water deeply and regularly, especially during dry periods, to ensure even fruit development. Mulching: Apply a thick layer of mulch around the base of the plants to retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and protect developing fruits. Support: Use trellises or supports for the vines if desired to save space and keep fruits off the ground.
