Sun, Soil & Climate Requirements:
Plant your olive tree in a location that receives at least 6-8 hours of sunlight each day, ideally with full sun exposure. Olive trees prefer well-draining soils and do not thrive in heavy, clayey soil.
When & How to Plant:
Plant in Spring or Fall. Use a 6-inch deep container for each seed, filling it with a mix of equal parts sand and compost, and a heated germination mat. Place one seed in each container, 2 inches deep. Set the germination mat to 60°F to promote root development. Keep the soil moist and water regularly.
Color & Characteristics:
Olive trees are evergreen, growing up to 25-30 feet tall with a similar spread. Their leaves are oblong and silverish, growing from branches extending from a gnarled, twisted trunk.
Germination & Bloom:
Olive seeds take around 40 days or longer to germinate and typically start bearing fruit after five years. It’s normal for olive trees to produce fruit every other year. They bloom in late spring.
Planting Suggestions:
Olive trees are not heavy feeders, and overly fertile soils can reduce fruit production.
